Non-Essential Amino Acids: Ocean’s Eleven

Out of 20 amino acids we need to maintain optimum health, our body can synthesize 11. Otherwise called non-essential amino acids, they are irreplaceable, irresistible, powerful ocean’s eleven of  human body, and go by Alanine, Arginine, Asparagine, Aspartate, Cysteine, Glutamate, Glutamine, Glycine, Proline, Serine and Tyrosine. Composed of the same elements as essential amino acids, nitrogen, carbon, oxygen and hydrogen molecules organized in amine and carboxylic acid group that give each amino acid  its particular property, they are basic units of major proteins in our body. As our body has found a way to preserve their production, supplementation is not necessary.  And while there are metabolic disorders that may require otherwise,  for now we will consider the needs of an average person.

Very convenient and handy, whether asleep or awake, whether chilling or jumping around, our body will produce all 11 non-essential amino acids as needed. So there is no need to go sneaking around grocery store, checking labels on the sly, as long as our body handles the magic eleven.  And it will as long as we let it. We supply nitrogen, carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and some vitamins and minerals and our body fires up the stove.

The eleven non-essential amino acids, same as their essential counterparts, facilitate numerous processes in our body without which we would not be able to survive. Funny when you think about it, but these feisty molecules are roadblocks that stand between us and cellular deterioration. So just how do they do that? As we can see, non-essential amino acids are just as important for variety of metabolic processes in our body as are essential amino acid. The fact that they are not an estranged family member certainly helps the situation. As long as we provide our body with sufficient levels of nitrogen, they will be there when we need them. But do not take them for granted. Just because they are there does not mean we should treat them badly. The 11 love to be  the center of attention and we need to give them their toys. Without nitrogen to synthesize them they will eventually taper off and their absence cause problems. So failure to provide body with necessary building elements will cause trouble. This is why we need to ingest nitrogen, carbon, and hydrogen rich food, and provide our body with elements necessary for non-essential amino acid synthesis.
